Which Tillage Tool and Why?

Why Disc Harrow?

Why Disc Harrow?

A disc harrow sizes residue into manageable pieces. This speeds decomposition by blending residue into soil. It also reclaims residue nutrients, reduces erosion, breaks up clods and levels the field - for an even soil profile. Sunflower disc harrows provide benefits that don’t come standard on competitive brands. Things like a heavier wing frame and gauge wheels that pivot on service-free material. The result: easy maintenance, long life and consistently great results.

Why Vertical Tillage?

Why Vertical Tillage?

To do their best, plants need even soil temperatures and consistent moisture content throughout the vertical soil profile. You can’t control wind and rain, but you can use the rugged, easy-to-adjust Sunflower 6600 Series Vertical Tillage System. It’s designed to anchor residue in the soil to prevent weather-related residue drift. The tool’s pre-set gang angle and exclusive fluted Saber Blade combine to give you unparalleled weed control, vertical soil movement and a uniform soil profile.

Why Field Cultivator?

Why Field Cultivator?

A field cultivator’s main function is to prepare a proper seed planting environment. That includes getting to the root of weed problems. Sunflower 5000 Series field cultivators keep the tool set level and maintain sweeps at the proper angle, undercutting completely across the width of the tool. Working at depths of 2 to 3 inches, they undercut and lift vegetation, depositing it on the soil surface where it dries out and dies.

Tips for Creating the Ultimate Seedbed

A little preparation pays big dividends. You’ll have fewer trips to the field, less erosion, and better management of the quality and performance of your next crop. Here are a few things to do before you head out:

Equal Out Tire Pressure. You want equal air pressure in tires. If there’s a slow leak, operating depth becomes deeper on that side.
Check Parts for Wear. Visually inspect all wear points on the equipment.
Gauge Wheels. It’s important on flexible tillage tools to prevent front-wing corners from gouging.
Adjust Tongue to Match Drawbar Height. Optimize fuel use and minimize wear on parts (e.g., the drawbar) by keeping the tool level and moving smoothly through the field.
Purge Air from Hydraulic Lines. With the implement’s hydraulics connected to the tractor, raise and lower the implement several times to allow the system to cycle fully.
Set Tillage Depth. A rule of thumb: set the depth of an implement such as a disc harrow at 25% of the blade diameter.
Pair Up Tools and Speed. Don’t overpower the tool. A general rule is 8 to 10 HP per foot to pull a tandem disc harrow at 5 to 6 mph.
Field Check. Check the field for signs of uneven operation, do a visual inspection to make sure your equipment is operating like you need it to.
